Inspector Andy O'Keefe

Your latest Blog from your local Inspector, Andy O'Keefe, who covers the Bargoed, Rhymney and Ystrad Mynach areas

Welcome to my latest Blog. It seems like one day we were in T shirts and the next I found myself scraping ice off the car to come to work; not nice that early in the morning.

I am writting this just after Halloween and Bonfire night and I was really pleased with the positive engagement events that my staff and our partners arranged with young people, with the aim of giving them a positive diversion from just hanging about on the street.

Unfortunately there were a core group of young people who saw the period as an opportunity to cause problems for residents. In Ystrad Mynach on Halloween we had a gathering of in excess of 100 youths and although many were well behaved, too many became involved in ASB and there were incidents of criminal damage.

My officers were faced with youths who clearly had no consideration or respect for others and I can assure residents that we are seeking to identify the youths. We have already identified some of them and they can expect a knock on the door. If you have any information to assist us with this, please can I ask that you speak to your local Neighbourhood team based at Ystrad Mynach Police Station.

Many of the youths congregating in Ystrad have no conection with the area and just turn up. I am holding a meeting with local councillors Hefin David AM and Wayne David MP and a number of community representitives to discuss the problem and  agree how we can work together to deal with this.

I am asking parents to speak to their young people to dissuade them from gathering in the area, as the next conversation could be with one of my officers. Officers were recently out on foot dealing with a number of young people which included a young man who was drunk & disorderly who ended up in custody. I am sure parents do not want the phone call to come and collect them on release, so I hope you will support us in addressing this issue.

I would like to congratulate PS1379 Chris Thomas who was successful in the recent Sergeants promotion process. Well done!
