Inspector Andy O'Keefe

Your latest Blog from your local Inspector, Andy O'Keefe, who covers the Bargoed, Rhymney and Ystrad Mynach areas

The summer is here, and being a true British Summer one minute you need sunscreen, the next wellington boots.

Over the last month there have been a few incidents of note.

Firstly the on 29th June a fire was set that caused extensive damage (£35,000) to the play area within Ystrad Mynach Park; this was crime that affected the whole community and resulted in the support of Crimestoppers in issuing a £1,000 Reward.

As a result of the work undertaken by my officers a 15 year old boy from the Rhymney area has been identified and interviewed on suspicion of Arson.

Local residents have been telling us about the large numbers of young people congregating in the evenings at Ystrad Mynach Park. My officers inform me that many are not local to Ystrad, coming from Treharris, Bedwas, and further afield. Not all young people are causing problems but the sheer numbers are causing anxiety to members of the community. I ask parents to speak to their children and support us by discouraging them from hanging around at the park.

I have taken a positive stance and over a number of weeks signed Dispersal Orders to assist my officers to effectively deal with the large numbers. We will continue to take positive action against those causing problems within the community and will be working with our partners such as the Local Authority Community Safety Wardens to identify and take action against those causing problems.

Finally I am pleased to take this opportunity to welcome a number of new officers to Caerphilly North

They are already out and about working with their Neighbourhood Response colleagues and I am sure they will all enjoy what is a hugely rewarding career.
